 Dick Bertell was a catcher who signed by the Chicago Cubs in the 1957 as an amateur free agent. Dick made his debut catching for the Cubs in 1960. Dick had his best season as a pro in 1962 when he hit .302 in 77 games with the Cubs. Dick played 5 plus seasons with the Cubs before being traded to the San Francisco Giants in May of 1965. Dick missed all of the 1966 season due to a knee injury. He attempted a comeback the following year and returned to the Cubs for his final shot at the big leagues. He appeared in only 2 games that final season before being released. Dick Bertell played in the big leagues for 7 seasons. He had a career .250 batting average with 10 Homeruns and 112 RBIs in 1310 at bats. Dick died in South Bend, Indiana in 1999 at the age of 64 from complications due to influenza and pneumonia. |
