 Douglas Edmund Capilla was born January 7, 1952 in Honolulu, HI. Doug was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 25th round of the 1970 amateur baseball draft. He signed his first pro contract right out of High School in June of 1970. Doug spent his first 6 seasons in the minor leagues. First with the Giants minor league affiliate and then after being drafted from the Giants by the Cardinals in the 1973 rule 5 draft, with the St Louis Cardinals farm teams. Doug Capilla made his major league pitching debut in September of 1976. Doug split time between the major leagues and the minor leagues over the next 6 seasons. He pitched for the Reds in 1977 and 1978 and was traded to the Cubs in May of 1979. Capilla pitched with the Cubs until 1981 and retired from baseball after a season in 1982 with the Montreal Expos farm team. In 6 partial seasons in the major leagues, Doug Capilla won 12 games, lost 18 with a 4.34 ERA and had 31 saves. In 10 partial seasons in the minor leagues, Doug Capilla won 53 games, lost 67 with a 5.02 ERA and 129 saves. In 1989 Capilla played for the West Palm Beach Tropics and Bradenton Explorers of the Senior Baseball League. |
