 George Altman made his major league debut in April of 1959 with the Chicago Cubs. Altman played briefly with the Negro Leagues Kansas City Monarchs in 1955 before being signed by the Cubs as an amateur free agent. Altman improved his play every season and peaked with back to back all star appearances in 1961 and 1962 with .303 and .318 batting averages and 22/27 Home Runs. After slumping in 1962, the Cubs traded Altman to the St. Louis Cardinals. Alman had a respectable .274 batting average with the Cardinals in 1963 but was traded to the Mets after the season was over. Altman spent one full time season with the Mets and returned to the Cubs in 1965. Altman finished his major league career as a role player with the Cubs from 1965 through 1967. Altogehter Altman played 9 seasons in the big leagues and had a .269 career batting average with 101 HRs and 403 RBIs. At the end of his major league career, Altman moved to Japan and played Japanese baseball for another 8 seasons until retiring for good in 1975. |
