 Glenn Beckert was signed by the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1962. He was then drafted by the Chicago Cubs from the Red Sox in the 1962 first-year draft. Glenn Beckert made his major league debut at second base for the Cubs in April of 1965. Beckert played shortstop in the minor leagues but moved to second base after the tragic death of Ken Hubbs. Beckert was a main stay for the Cubs at second base for 9 seasons. He appeared in 4 All Star games as a Cub and won a gold glove at second base in 1968. Beckert was an exceptional contact hitter always ranking near the top in fewest strikeouts per season. Beckert had his finest season at the plate in 1971 when he hit .342. Beckert was traded to the San Diego Padres after the 1973 season and finished his career in San Diego after being released by the Padres early in the 1975 season. Glenn Beckert played 11 seasons in the big leagues hitting .283 in 5,208 at bats. He also had a career fielding percentage of .977. |
